Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care

Program Description:
Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) provides an alternative to institutional, residential and group home care for youth with chronic juvenile delinquency. Youth involved with MTFC often show emotional and behavioral problems that present a challenge. Through a collaborative effort by the Treatment Team, the program focuses on decreasing anti-social behaviors and increasing developmentally appropriate social skills and behaviors, to help youth experience success at home, at school, and in the community

Program Guidelines:
Ages served: MTFC is for youth ages 12 to 18 years of age

Program length: The duration of MTFC placement is approximately 6-9 months

Program is limited to one foster child per home

MTFC Model:
Success is accomplished by providing:
• Close supervision
• Fair and consistent limits
• Predictable rewards and sanctions for following or breaking rules
• A supportive relationship with at least one mentoring adult
• Emphasis on school performance

The intervention is multi-faceted and occurs in multiple settings.

The components include:
• Behavioral parent training and support for MTFC foster parents and biological parents
• Skills training for the youth
• Family therapy for biological families
• Supportive therapy for the youth and involved adults
• School-based behavioral interventions and academic support
• Psychiatric consultation and medication management when needed

The Treatment Team:
The MTFC Treatment Team consists of:
• Program Supervisor
• A Family Therapist
• An Individual Therapist
• A Youth Skills Trainer
• MTFC Foster Parent
• Biological family or aftercare resource

MTFC Foster Parents
Foster parents are recruited, trained and supported to be part of the Treatment Team. They provide close supervision and implement a structured, individualized program for each youth. The youth’s program is designed by the Program Supervisor (with input from the rest of the Treatment Team). Working with the foster parents, the Program Supervisor builds on the youth’s strengths, but also sets clear rules, expectation, and limits.

Youth’s Family
The biological family, or aftercare resource, is an important part of the team. They receive support, parent training, and family therapy while learning to discipline, supervise, and encourage their youth. Therapy is provided to reduce conflict in the family and support progress. Family sessions and home visits provide the family with opportunities for the parents and youth to practice skills and receive feedback.
